Statement from Global Alcohol Producers Group on WHO Global Status Report on Alcohol and Health

Feb. 11, 2011

Although alcohol beverages are enjoyed responsibly by most consumers who choose to drink, some individuals misuse alcohol products.  Members of the Global Alcohol Producers Group (GAP Group) recognize the harmful effects of irresponsible drinking patterns, and the companies will continue their long-standing efforts to help reduce the harmful use of alcohol.

GAP Group members are now working to support the objectives of the WHO Global Alcohol Strategy as it moves forward at specific regional and national levels.  The global alcohol strategy acknowledges the significance of different national, religious and cultural contexts for alcohol and proposes a menu of options that Member States may tailor to their cultures in order to reduce the harmful use of alcohol. The strategy also recognizes the need for the involvement of all stakeholders, including the industry, and the importance of self-regulation in helping address alcohol abuse.
